Herniated Discs

Everest Therapeutics are leaders in the massage world and have always been dedicated to providing clients with the best treatment, at all times. As one of downtown Vancouver’s oldest massage therapy clinics, our team of 25 RMTs has experience in many different areas of practice. In addition, we are open from 8 AM – 8 PM, seven days a week so that you can get the treatment you need, whenever you need it. As part of Vancouver’s largest interdisciplinary clinic — Electra Health — our RMTs are accompanied by physiotherapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists and more!

At Everest, our RMTs have extensive experience in treating injuries related to motor-vehicle accidents. One common injury incurred from car accidents is a herniated disc. A herniated disc occurs when the spinal disc’s outer ring becomes torn or weak, allowing the inner portion to slip out. This causes irritation to spinal nerves and causes discomfort, numbness, weakness and pain in your limbs.

Click to hear Mark explain the treatment protocol for herniated discs

At Everest, we know how frustrating it can be to deal with herniated discs. That is why we approach treatment differently: using a proven rehab program called the PAARCC protocol, we match your massage therapist with a Rehabilitation Team Leader. Together, they will design a recovery program tailored specifically to you. They may also build out your therapeutic team, depending on your needs. This team will consist of your massage therapist, but may also include physio, acupuncture, chiro and counselling. As Everest is part of a larger clinic, you will have access to other healthcare professionals, which makes it convenient for you to get the treatments you need!

What to expect in your first session:

At your first appointment, you will receive an assessment from your massage therapist before beginning your treatment. During any treatments, your comfort is a top priority for our therapists: they will treat you based on your pain level and will use manual therapy to help ease discomfort and tension from your injury.

At the booking of your first appointment, you will also be matched with a Rehabilitation Team Leader, who is a certified kinesiologist. The kinesiologist is crucial to your recovery and your go-to throughout the entire process. Alongside your massage therapist, they work to design a treatment program for you. Along with massage therapy, this program will include active rehab, and may also include other types of therapy, such as physio, acupuncture, chiro and counselling. Because Everest is part of Electra Health, getting these treatments is easy, so you can focus on getting better fast!

Is it safe to get a massage after having a herniated disc?
Yes! Massage therapy is a great tool to treat non-surgical herniated discs. At Everest, we also believe that herniated discs are best treated through a combination of different types of therapy. That is why your kinesiologist may also recommend that you receive other types of treatments.

Will ICBC cover my massage therapy?
Yes! We bill ICBC directly, so you do not have to cover any of the costs. ICBC automatically pre-approves you for treatments listed below, within 3 months of your accident date. Pre-approvals are based on your accident date, so it is important that you get started right away!

How long will it take to recover from a herniated disc?
The length of recovery depends on the individual and the severity of the injury. However, we aim to have you back to feeling your best after 3 months of consistent treatment.

What are the symptoms of a slipped disc?
Symptoms for slipped discs include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Pain and/or numbness in arms or legs, usually on one side

  • Pain that worsens after standing, sitting or walking

  • Unexplained muscle weakness

  • Tingling, aching, or burning sensations in the affected area

  • Nerve pain and/or damage

Summary

At Everest, we know the difficulties that can arise from herniated discs and how painful your symptoms can be. That is why we believe in treating them through our PAARCC program. A proven method, this program is overseen by a kinesiologist, who works closely with your RMT. Together, they design, implement and oversee your recovery. In addition, they can prescribe other forms of treatment, such as physio, acupuncture, chiro and counselling, which are fantastic in promoting a healthy spine. As a multi-disciplinary clinic, we provide all the services needed to help you recover in the convenience of one clinic. Our direct billing to ICBC means getting these treatments comes at no cost to you, so you can focus on getting better!
